Jens,
This is a known IE bug. Check out
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q182/3/15.asp. My company,
among other things, builds catalog/commerce sites for stock photography. We
would like to be able to present the user with a 'Save As...' dialog when
they are ready to download their purchase, but on IE, we ran into the same
problem, since IE 'knows' that JPEGs are supposed to be displayed in a
window.
Here's a quote for the bug document:
You might think that setting the Content-Type to a type unknown to Explorer
would force the File Download dialog box. In fact, the Explorer "sniffs" the
data sent from the server and detects the type of file being sent. If it
recognizes the file type, it will behave according to the user preference.
At this point, there is no completely reliable way to force the File
Download dialog box to appear when downloading a file to Internet Explorer.
Misery loves company,
Chris
