That depends on the type of authentication you're using. The user name and
password in Basic HTTP Authentication (which is probably what you're using) is
either Base64 or uuencoded (someone else can clarify) -- which is really not
encrypted at all, since those algorithms are freely available. There are other
methods, like NT challenge/response, but your servlet engine may not support
them. You can, of course, use Basic Auth through SSL, which would be more
secure.
