Well, we've got a good hint from somebody who answered to our
posting by mailing directly to us.

The JVM always crashed, generating an the error:
**Out of Memory, exiting**
We thought we had a Memory Leak somewhere and we monitored
everything concerning Memory Usage etc, etc...
We also made logfiles in which we tried to follow what happened
during our calculations.

Those logfiles were part of the problem.
Probably due to a bug, the JVM mistook a "Too many files open"
error for a "Out of Memory" error.
The only thing we had to do was to increase the number of
filehandles the OS could manage.

So, we lost a lot of time, finding a stupid bug in our own code
(we opened too many logfiles, never closing them), because of
the JVM who tried to make us believe we were using too much
memory, instead of just telling us: sorry guys, you tried to
open too many files there...
