Actually, there are several ways to accomplish this type of feedback. The
method you choose depends partly on whether your request is a GET or a POST
and partly on your clients. If you know your audience browsers will handle
server push, you might use one method; otherwise, you might split your
"please wait..." output and your actual process into two threads that can
write to the same stream.

I would suggest looking through the archives for this list. this question
has been presented a number of times and several good suggestions can be
found in the archives.
