a jsp and a servlet can share session state as long as they are
cohosted within the same servlet context.

which piece of code, the jsp or the servlet, contains the data
you want to respond back to the client (eg browser)? if it is
the jsp, then you could consider moving your logic to simply
java code (not necessary to extend HttpServlet) or, possibly,
use the jsp:include tag in one manner or another (sounds
hacky). if the servlet owns the responsibility of getting a response
to the client then the jsp:forward tag might serve nicely.
