I don't believe it matters whether you are displaying anything, but
that if you are manipulating graphics/images you need to have the X
server installed and running. I don't know the exact details, and I'm
just going by some things I've read about this. It has to do with the
graphics/image-related classes needing to create peers, I believe. I
also recall hearing that there *may* be some way around this in JDK
1.2. If installing/running X is a problem, there are some "fake" X
servers out there that you may be able to use (e.g. Xvfb).
