Our listserv has been, to say it politely, screwed royally. I responded
to the message (and it didn't' show up here) with something like the
following:

No, this forum is not a debate forum for the Servlet API Specification
process. No official public debate forum exists. I encourage that all
activity about the spec go through the official means (the feedback
alias) so that it can be cataloged, tracked, etc. There's no way to
effectively use a general public forum as a debate forum on a spec. Too
many people, too many comments, too few results. Instead, we use a
working group, called the expert group, to do most of the work of the
spec. The expert group is formed from industry leaders and individuals
who are considered to be "experts". This group for servlets is well over
20 people from a variety of places (and there's only 2 Sun Specification
people that are participants on this list).

>From the JCP doc

"The actions of the Expert Group are coordinated by the Specification
Lead - the Expert responsible for writing the Specification with
input from the other members of the Expert Group. He or she will
ultimately be responsible for developing and maintaining consensus
within the group as well as rendering tie-breaking decisions based
on his or her technical and design knowledge when general consensus
   cannot be reached."

As the servlet API predates the JCP considerably, we've been merging our
existing process to the JCP. At this point, from Public Review on, we
are proceeding with the Servlet spec exactly according to the JCP.
Currently we are at Step 7 -- Public Review. And yes, I am reading every
email to the feedback alias. I've currently got about an inch of
printouts to go through.

For more info about the process.

> We don't want to fill the list with stuff that shouldn't be here.

It's not an issue of what should be on one list or another. It's just
that stuff posted here doesn't make it into the process. There's no way
it can be guaranteed. If you want to talk about the spec with others,
that's fine. But the outcome of those talks have to go into the feedback
process, otherwise it may be moot to discuss it in the first place.

About using this list, I don't want to see any talking / debating on the
spec here on the general purpose servlet-interest list. There's enough
going on here with education of people about how servlets are, how they
work, etc. Talking about the future here only confuses the issue.
