Not agreeing with Olek's tone (for which he has already apologised), I
do agree with the points he is making.

But interestingly one of those moderators has suggested that just what
Olek is doing (although not necessarily how he is doing it) is a good
idea -- that is, some self-policing by the users of this list so that
the signal-to-noise ratio remains high.

I don't necessarily think rude responses to off-topic queries is the
best approach.  Perhaps the question can be answered, sent directly to
the poster and not the entire list, and with a reminder that it is
off-topic.
