OK, so I tried the code on IRIX with JDK 1.1.5, and it works fine.
Seems you may have a JDK bug.  The URL to report this is
http://java.sun.com/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi.

But before you go reporting, let me point out that I had to change
mm=08 to mm=8 though because the compiler generated an error because it
thought 08 was an octal number and an "8" is invalid in octal.  You
didn't hit that?  Maybe your compiler is doing something magical with
the 8.
