It's simply that cron is already there and as such is a tried and
tested method.

There is nothing intrinsically *wrong* with doing it the way you
suggest.

To get the flexibility of cron however you have a lot of work on your
hands.

The adjunct to my original email was trying to suggest that if you
have a specific task, eg: checking a mailstore, that is pertinent to
your servlet it might well be the way to do it.

Also if you can't gaurantee access to cron.

Also, personal preference.
