Well, this thread has got completely out of hand and is chewing up way to
many brain cycles.

How about I do a quick summary and we leave it at that?

- getLastModifed() is a bit simplistic (for me, certainly), but is useful in
some circumstances
- Craig documented the design pattern to do it yourself if you think it's
restictive
- if I ever have the time I'll try and think of a way to add more flexible
support for caching to the API and send it in to scare you guys :-)
- don't suggest deprecation unless you want a flame war (kidding!)
