Philip:
What you're describing sounds very much like a think we call "database
objects" in our open-source Expresso framework. It lets you very quickly
create an object that "maps" to one or more database tables, then lets you
do a lot of things with the object - the object keeping itself synchronized
with the database as appropriate. Feel free to download a copy at
http://www.javacorporate.com. If it doesn't do the job for you, we're always
open to suggestions. Once you've defined the object, we have a servlet that
gives you instant basic maintenance forms (e.g. add, update, delete, search,
that kind of thing) by just handing it the name of the object as an
argument. There's security in there too.
There are also a couple of other approaches to this same issue out there in
open source, if you search the list archives I'm sure you'll find them.
