one case study is javashop.sun.com (the backend commerce system
to much of java.sun.com) is:
3+ years old
a real-time extranet app [concurrent connections
with internet requests and real intranet
business systems]
is based on servlets/jhtml
has done a healthy amount of volume including
the recent distribution of star office and
j2ee beta
dual purposed in that the licensee code is
distributed from the same system yet the content,
url address, has the appearance of being a
completely different system
interacts with backend systems which may not
necessarily be in the same local system or
even supported by the same company (eg file
distribution is/can be done from large boxes
with bigger pipes to the internet then the
boxes serving up the interactive content ...
all without compromising any of the underlying
business integrity)
note: this approach allows for the
creation of transactions which
can span systems and company
domain boundaries
transactions supported include:
real time credit card auth and capture
tax calculation
integration with order fulfillment supplier
export controls
denied parties
encrypted software distribution checks
software purchases
download
cd media
subscription
free software distribution
software upgrades (free and for purchase)
source code distribution
email notifications
order confirmation
shipping notification
subscription notification
supplier agnostic (allows us to pick'n choose
suppliers)
customer service controls (same screens with
a few extra capabilities based on
role)
readily changeable content (jhtml - jsp today)
scalable, extensible, flexible, *able
*real* business system
was a port of a rather large (23k) cgi program
which existed 2+ years prior (i wrote both of
them)
lots of positive metrics over designing,
extended, supporting and deploying a java
based extranet app over an equivalent cgi
based app
hope this helps,
- james
