Folks,
This discussion has taken a turn for the worse -- why 'go for the
broke' by having the knowledge base or searchable FAQ when you
don't have any money to gamble with? How about *writing* the FAQ
first, then making it searchable or indexed or whatever.
Speaking as a user, I'd greatly prefer to have something that
offers me a list of FAQs rather than a search field which is
nice to have but by no means critical. The traditional approach
of the FAQ as a document with sections and an index of questions at the top
works very well and JSP FAQ is a good example of this.
Another sticking point is content. In my experience, having a FAQ
be moderated (edited) by one or more experts is far better than
letting users run amok with their own questions and answers. The quality of
the FAQ is more important than the convenience of
having the users "maintain" the FAQ themselves. If a tool such
as FAQ-O-Matic is used, posts should be moderated. (FAQ-O-Matic
does allow this).
Can we take this offlist, perhaps to servletfaq@eGroups?
Alex.
