The MAC address has only any relevans if the computers communicating is
placed on the same physical lan and not via any IP routers - connections
through HUBs and bridges are ok.

No. You can get the IP address, but not the MAC address, in Java. Come to
think of it, can you get the MAC address of the remote
end of a connection, even using native system calls in C or C++?
