I'm not sure if I understand. You can check for version of HTTP supported from
environment variable (SERVER_PROTOCOL). The RFC states that persistent
connections 'SHOULD' be implemented. In HTTP 1.1 that is supposed to be
standard.
I don't think it really matters to a URLConnection whether it's riding on a
persistent TCP connection or not. I'm probably not helping you too much.
BTW your disclaimer is scary and quite huge too :)
