Try this:

 after>       Calendar calendarToday = Calendar.getInstance();
       java.sql.Date searchDate = new java.sql.Date().setTime(calendarToday.getTime());

If that doesn't work,
print the date above and compare with way 'mysql' expects to see the date. Check their 
docs.

<curious>What is 'mysql'?
