This really doesn't belong here, but here's a quickie explanation (and
if it gets people to post their non-servlet java questions there, it
will have been worth it :-).
Doesn't everyone here know about newsgroups/Usenet? It's pre-web
Internet technology, but it is still very much alive and kicking.
There isn't really a URL (well, you can use
"news:comp.lang.java.blah", but that's not typically the way people
access newsgroups). You use a newsreader program to access newsgroups
from a particular newsserver (analogous to the way many read email).
Netscape Navigator/Communicator has a newsreader in it, as does IE,
plus there are many other newsreaders out there, depending on the
platform you use. There are thousands of newsgroups, and of
particular relevance here is that there is a comp.lang.java.*
hierarchy or newsgroups. Here are the ones available on my
newsserver:
comp.lang.java.3d
comp.lang.java.advocacy
comp.lang.java.announce
comp.lang.java.beans
comp.lang.java.corba
comp.lang.java.databases
comp.lang.java.gui
comp.lang.java.help
comp.lang.java.machine
comp.lang.java.programmer
comp.lang.java.security
comp.lang.java.softwaretools
They tried to get a servlets newsgroup going, but it failed the vote;
they may try again (chances are that effort will be mentioned here, as
it was the last time).
If you are totally new to newsgroups, it may take a little to get
going, but it is worth it. If you are getting online via an ISP, they
should have information to help you get started with newsgroups, like
how to configure your newsreader to use their newsserver.
One thing that makes newsgroups even more useful is that there are
newsgroup archive web sites out there, basically they store all
newsgroup postings, and you can search them. Under the premise that
someone has previously come across the same problem/situation/question
as you currently, and posted about it in a newsgroup, you can find
answers to your questions without even asking them! (Of course, if
you don't find them, you can just go ahead an ask them.) The archive
site I use is dejanews (www.dejanews.com), now called just deja
(www.deja.com). They also have a "power search" page that allows to
focus your newsgroup search much more, restricting things like
newsgroups to search in, dates, etc. I pretty much always/only use
the power search page.
Hope this helps.
