I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tea on this list yet. It's worth
looking at. Tea (and the TeaServlet) are a templating framework that
was recently open sourced from GO.com. It's built using servlets and
used on their large sites like ESPN.com. I've used it and really like
it. They allowed me to experiment with a pre-release (so I could
include it in my "survey of content creation tools" in my 2nd edition)
and while I'm not done writing about all the various tools yet and may
change my mind, it's currently my favorite content creation mechanism.
It's clean, elegant, and proven to scale. It's well implemented too --
I didn't find a single bug during all my use. The Kettle IDE is
amazingly cool and mature. Plus the license for the toolset is
Apache-style, a less restrictive license than WebMacro has.

Wired has some good coverage:

The URL is:

Look for full coverage in the upcoming 2nd edition of "Java Servlet
Programming", along with comparison coverage with JSP, WebMacro, XMLC,
ECS, and Cocoon. (I'm really excited about this new section of the
book; unfortunately, it takes a while to write so I'm still hard at
work.)
