Hi,
You can found the answer in the introduction of the book "Java Servlet Programming" 
(Jason Hunter, O'Reilly
1998).
In few words, U have 3 sorts of servlet engine :
    - autonomous engine like JWS
    - additional engine like Jserv (it's like a plug-in to the web server)
    - embarquable engine
