How about something inbetween? A group where you have to think at
least once or twice, and try to find the information you need from a
number of easily available sources, before posting to the list. That
is not an unreasonable standard at all. Especially for a list with
the kind of volume and signal-to-noise ratio this one has.
We're not talking about complex questions that are receiving this kind
of response. These are things that are typically answered in the
first couple of chapters of any servlet book, or are addressed in many
FAQs and/or online tutorials (like Sun's), or the API documentation/FM,
or the list archives. And there have even been lots of very off-topic
questions posted here, things that are not related to servlets, or
even java.
Another thing that can be a problem is when several people all post
the answer to a basic question to the list. In those cases, it would
be better if the answers were sent directly to the original poster and
not to the list.
Yes, there has been some rudeness from those tired of the simple
and/or off-topic questions (including me), but you don't seem to
consider the inherent rudeness and selfishness of those that post
these basic/off-topic questions in the first place, with all
appearances that they are trying to get other people to do their work
for them. Someone posted a note similar to yours, saying that if they
offend, it's only for the good of the list. Well, it's the good of
the list that the people complaining about the basic/off-topic lists
are interested in as well.
