You would 'normally' use Tomcat with either Apache or IIS. They would do the
html serving and support SSL connections while Tomcat would be used just as the
Servlet engine.
These combinations really  work reliably and efficiently. This is what I am have
been doing for over a year now.  Very large sites also use this kind of
combination.

p.s. You must be from an MS shop. I am working in a mixed MS/Unix environment
and I see the faces of 'pure' MS people twitch when they see the level of
complexity working reliable with Java. With C# I am sure that even MS will be
able to support this kind of complex systems 5 to 10 years from now! IMHO they
would be impossible to construct with C++ or VB just now! I also drive Corba and
EJBs from Servlets. (Just to add to the complexity) The very same code works on
both Win2000 and Unix.
