 Think corporate intranets, where you've got a
fast network and close control over the client
systems.

 The more you can assume about the client platform
and network performance, the more reasonable it
becomes to use an applet/servlet combo.

 If your audience is the general public over the
public Internet, then you can't make very many
assumptions...
