Simple answer: There's a request header called "User-Agent",
you probably could have found this out by looking in the
archives. The user-agent header will work fine if all you
want to do is dump the values to a log.

 But...

Why do you want to know? The field is not guaranteed
to be there, and if it is, it can be hard to tell what
it really means. For example, some proxies filter out
or change the User-Agent header. And there are many
more user agents out there than are dreamed of in your
philosophy, because they include things like search
engine spiders, and command line download utilities
like wget, text browser like lynx, etc. etc.

If you're trying to figure out, for example, if
javascript is supported, you also have to allow for
the fact that people can turn javascript off even
if they have a browser that can support it.

There are actually commercial products whose only
purpose is to figure out what sort of browser a
site visitor has...
