I've been using ArgoUML (http://argouml.tigris.org/).  It is free,
and is a good way, I think, to get into UML without making a big
investment.  Some of the functionality is still being developed,
but most of what you might need is there.

Save your work, and make backup copies often, because there are
a few bugs in it.

I use Rational Rose for UML and its pretty good. There must be loads of
tutorials on the web for the theory.
