i use the username and passwd to connect mysql is ok on console:
  #mysql -u mysql
    Welcome to the MySQL monitor.  Commands end with ; or \g.
    Your MySQL connection id is 29 to server version: 3.23.30-gamma-log
    Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer
    mysql>

it's same tourble when use 127.0.0.1 instead of  localhost in my codes.
So what else reason?
