According to Jason Hunter ("Java Servlet Programming, 2d. ed.," pp. 132-133,
based on Clinton Wong's "HTTP Pocket Reference"), the connection can persist
as long as you want it to.  And of course you can send HTTP requests to a
"client" if the client can handle such requests (like another webserver).

Oh really?  Have you ever used persistent connections?  With a persistent
connection, the server only keeps the connection open a certain period of
time after returning a response.  It does not allow the servlet to send
http requests to the client.
