It's not a bad idea it is the idea that was proposed from sun. In conjunction with ejb sun proposed to use a bean as delegation instance: The servlet calls a bean which in turn calls the ejb. But appart from ejb it's always a good idea to encapsulate certain system aspects (your sql code) in a own classes. Without changing the servlet you can change from one database to another by simply adapting your bean's jdbc call.
