 Depends on for what. Both Tomcat and Jetty are Open Source
and have (more or less) reasonable architectures. I used
the Tomcat framework as a basis for MinimalTomcat:

 but Jetty is, if anything, even easier to modify. Writing
a container from scratch is an option, but the 80/20 rule
applies: you'll be able to get about 80% of the functionality
easily, but the last 20% or so is quite hard. If you need a
fullly compliant container, I would definitely go with Jetty
or Tomcat (or Paperclips) as a base.
