Christopher, thanks for the pointer. I just started working with filters, but the deeper I get, the more I agree with you that the current servlet spec is inadequate when it comes to serving filter needs. I wish some people involved in the discussion on the advanced-servlet list could see this too instead of taking the attitude "I don't use it, therefore there is no need for it in the spec." Oh, well...
There is a bug on sun's bug database related to this issue, #4647413. I've cast a vote for it. I encourage everyone who's interested in the issue to do the same.
