This thread is the result of my query last week soliciting recommendations
from users of server-side Java ISP providers. Pursuing my own research, I
found that there are only about 70 such ISPs in the United States and the
range of services - some define "Java support" as just applets (ignorance
alert!), just JSPs but not servlets (ignorance alert!), just servlets (2.1,
2.2, and, rarely, 2.3), servlets and EJB (1.1 and, rarely, 2.0), and
everything including JMS - require careful scrutiny. The platforms ranged
from Tomcat, JBoss, and Resin to WebSphere, WebLogic and iPlanet (with one
or two JRun's - ugh). JVMs can be dedicated or shared. Prices ranged from
$280/year - over $2000/year. I think a website keeping an up-to-date
listing of these ISPs and their offerrings would be of great service to the
Java community.

For myself, I chose CQhost. For $280/year I have JSP 1.2, Servlets 2.3, EJB
2.0 on Resin Enterprise 2.1.1, PHP 4.2.1, ASP 3.6.2, MySQL 2.2.4, FTP,
unlimited email, unlimited bandwidth, 750MB disk space, DNS, SSL, JDBC and
CGI on a limited-shared (4 accounts max) JVM.

Well, just by asking these questions and soliciting this input, you're
off to a great start. I don't have a lot of experience using hosting
services (of any kind, let alone with Java on the server), so I'm not
sure I can offer much specific suggestions personally. The list of
questions someone posted earlier in this thread was pretty good. I
think the issue of how you separate different users but keeping good
performance and security is a big one (e.g. multiple JVMs, multiple
contexts, etc.). And it seems like the question of where to go for
hosting services offering Java on the server comes up regularly on
this list, so likely there are others who can offer suggestions. But
it sounds like you're off to a good start, and maybe I'll be looking
you up at some point in the future :-).
