I do not like the approach but ... client can automatically do request with certain 
period (from javascript) and if the response indicates that server will go down ...
This will not work in the case of unexpected error, but it will work if, for instance, 
server is planned to go down for maintenace.
Anyway, the approach with auxiliary server sounds better to me.
