Sounds like a job for a Listener interface which is new to the 2.3 servlet spec. To be more specific, "I think" you want to look at implementing the HttpSessionListener which defines two methods: sessionCreated() and sessionDestroyed(). I'm sure their are other ways since this has been done before listeners. You might also want to look at the log() method to time-stamp your traffic.
