Well, that's one of us. Still can't get though here.

Friday afternoon one of the RAID cards on our science database server
freaked out and we've been spending all weekend recovering from that. Our
biggest worry is that enough drives went "offline" that we may have lost
everything. In the worst case, we'd have to restore the whole database from
our most recent science database backup tapes. However, it looks like, after
several Veritas incantations, we may be much better off than that. The
database seems to be stable, and we're currently in the process of gingerly
testing it before bringing it back to full use.
Today, we are finally going to replace those RAID cards with regular SCSI
cards since we're using Veritas to do all our disk mirroring anyway. The
surgery is scheduled for sometime this afternoon and this outage won't
affect user connections to our data server.
Speaking of the data server, there has been a pesky bug that has been
annoying many of our users for which we are working on making a permanent
fix, and we ran out of temp space this morning so the server became quite
sluggish for a couple of hours. Sorry for all the inconveniences.
What a weekend.
On the bright side, we are also in the midst of moving our workunit storage
to the new NetApp filer. The disk towers currently storing the workunits are
getting old - the new storage will be much easier to maintain, will allow us
to reboot the data server machine faster (since we won't have to fsck so
many drives), and will also allow us to store many more workunits on disk at
a time. Once this is done and tested, we'll repurpose the disk towers for
less project-critical storage.
