What I see happening is that when I go to either site the browser pulls
up the same page and content for the welcome page. I can see that on the
"test2" site, the links to things like the page owner under the title
are linked back to the "test1" site. Same with the nav protlet - the
links are back to the other site.
So I must be missing something in how things are getting rewritten or
proxied, but I can't figure out what.
I'll run thru all the various instructions to see if I somehow missed
something.

It comes up as the first site again and not the second. I've tried
various permutations of this, but can't quite to seem to make it work.
Your config looks perfectly OK. Are there any hints in your rewrite log?
