It should work based on what you print below.

Several people have reported problems getting up and running on Debian lately, with the same symptoms as you have. Check the file system permissions, and if those are OK, I'd just install it from source. The debian packages of Zope/Plone are a constant source of pain.

Still nothing appears in the zope management console... any more ideas? Am I missing something? I feel kind of retarded....

I installed Plone "from source" into /var/lib/zope/instance/ default/Products/Plone-2.1.2 (the dir the README.Debian file tells me to put it), but it still will not show up in the Zope management interface even after zopectl restart _and_ a restart of the computer.
