want to stay out of the ZMI security tab unless you learn just what it

I think you
may want to delete your Plone site and add a new one. Then use only the
"Sharing" tab to give permission to your users or groups. Also, you probably
don't want to give users the Manager role. The Owner role will allow them to add
all of their content and the Reviewer role will allow them to Publish
it.
