I've just installed Plone with a view to using it to manage a website I'm
developing. At this stage I feel that I'm on a very steep part of the
initial learning curve and I'm hoping someone can help point me in the
right direction with this problem.

I installed Zope 2.7.9 and Plone 2.1.2 on my FreeBSD 6.1 system by compiling
the FreeBSD ports, then I ran /usr/local/www/Zope/bin/mkzopeinstance.py to
set up a user and added a plone instance as instructed in
<http://plone.org/documentation/how-to/setup-from-source>. So far so good,
I was able to go to my newly created site at //localhost:8080/plone-site
and start editing.

With so much to learn about Plone I thought I'd start by going through Sean
Kelly's "Editing with Plone" video and soon saw my first problem - When he
uploaded an image it appeared as a thumbnail and he had a "transform" tab
but when I do this there's neither a thumbnail nor a "transform" tab. A bit
of Goggling suggested that I probably didn't have PIL so I downloaded this
and installed it. I'm a total newbie to Python too so I hope I did it
right, I followed the installation instructions in the README notes that
came with PIL and everything ran without any error messages so I assume
it's right. After restarting Zope I still didn't have the thumbnail or tab
and the Zope error log was reporting that I didn't have the Python Imaging
Libraries:-

"2006-10-30T15:08:46 INFO(0) Archetypes [00m
[01;32mProducts/Archetypes/Field.py[88]:?
[00mWarning: no Python Imaging Libraries (PIL) found.Archetypes based
ImageField's don't scale if neccessary."

To further cloud the issue I've ended up with 2 versions of Python on my
system. The FreeBSD port of Plone depends on Python 2.3.5 which was
installed when I built Plone but all the other packages depending on Python
use 2.4.3. In case plone was using the "other" version I installed PIL into
both versions of Python but still no success.

Any suggestions what I should try next?

Also do I really need both versions of Python, can I uninstall 2.3.5 and get
Plone to use 2.4.3?
