Hi Ric, there's a lot to digest here.
If I understand what you have already said correctly, CacheFu is currently setting headers so that the page is not being cached in varnish (because of the problems associated with separating the authenticated and non-authenticated views of the same page). However, as this does not apply to images, css files etc, which will be cached, the result will be an overall speed-up of delivery.
