I've tried to install PloneLDAP two different ways - adding it to the buildout, and putting the three directories in the Zope Products directory. Multiple restarts of Plone.
Neither results in the acl_users drop down containing any LDAP references at all. This is on Centos 5.3 using the included python binaries.
