I don't think that the windows installation information is upto date on this site. I've just tried installing Plone 3.3.5 with the windows installer. There seem to be inconsistencies with the documentation. Am I right? Is anyone interested in helping me sort this? I've been using Plone since Plone 1.0.5. Documentation has improved recently with the Packt books - but the community needs to keep on top of this if it doesn't wants to put off potential users of plone.
Problem number 1 Most recent documentation regarding installing Plone 3 on windows is at http://www.installationwiki.org/Installing_Plone_3 http://www.installationwiki.org/Installing_Plone_3 (Packt Practical Plone 3 book) However the windows plone controller has changed by the time we use 3.3.5. Is there any documentation explaining the new configuration? Problem number 2 I tried starting to ensure the buildout is properly configured for my proposed set-up: First I went to: http://plone.org/documentation/topic/Installation#windows http://plone.org/documentation/topic/Installation#windows 1) http://plone.org/documentation/kb/running-plone-on-windows http://plone.org/documentation/kb/running-plone-on-windows doesn't apply to 3.3.5 2) tried http://plone.org/documentation/kb/buildout-using-windows-installer http://plone.org/documentation/kb/buildout-using-windows-installer - got all the way to using paster: Python\Scripts\paster create -t plone3_buildout ‘yoursitename’ and got the error message: ************************************************************************** ** *** NOTE: You probably don't want to use this template! ** Since Plone 3.1, the preferred way to get a buildout-based setup ** for Plone is to use the standard installer for your operating ** system (the Windows installer, the Mac installer, or the Unified ** Installer for Linux/Unix/BSD). These give you a best-practice, ** widely-used setup with an isolated Python and a well-documented ** buildout. This template is here for older versions of Plone and ** for experts who explicitly want a raw, non-installer-based ** installation. ** (This message is particularly aimed at people following out-of- ** date books/documentation that suggest this is the right way to get ** a Plone-based buildout. This is no longer the case.) ************************************************************************** 3) Tried http://plone.org/documentation/kb/using-buildout-on-windows http://plone.org/documentation/kb/using-buildout-on-windows and saw: "Please note: as of Plone 3.2, a Windows installer based on buildout is available. If you're new to Plone and/or new to developing Plone on Windows, it is highly recommended that you download the Windows installer for ease of installation and setup. Additional start up notes are also available." - which led me to http://www.catapultsolutions.net/resources/installing-plone-3-2-1-using-the-windows-installer.html http://www.catapultsolutions.net/resources/installing-plone-3-2-1-using-the-windows-installer.html - i.e. back to the instructions in the installationwiki (Problem number 1). 4) Noticed the "readme" in the root of the plone3 installation which starts: "Starting Zope/Plone =================== Before you start Plone, you should review the settings in: C:\plone3/buildout.cfg Adjust the ports Plone uses before starting the site, if necessary, and run C:\plone3\bin/buildout to apply settings. ...etc..." I followed these readme instructions and those in the buildout.cfg and spent ages waiting for all sorts of updates and error messages to pass me in a cmd prompt window. Finally after installing all sorts of ?3.3.1 components and generating scripts it paused indefinitely after: Generated script 'C:\\plone3\\bin\\plonectl' I only moved on by pressing the key. I re-ran C:\plone3>bin\buildout and received no updates Created a plone instance (which I had to call "Plone" if I wanted the "View Plone..." controller button to launch it). Conclusion 1) Documentation is all a bit of a mess and following it a time waste. With so much emphasis these days on "turnaround" we need to do better with the windows documentation. 2) At the very least we should confine documentation to the version it was written for and not have things like "Refers to Plone3.x" - should have "Refers to Plone 3.1.8 to 3.2.2" or whatever. 3) As part of the pre-requisite for a version launch (e.g. 3.3.5) someone should run through the standard installation instructions for Win/Mac/?Ubuntu. If there is no time then the documentation should be capped at the version it works for. 4) I know most of the community works on Linux/Mac - but if a good number of us want to promote plone to new users - quick straightforward windows instructions are a real help. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Upto-date-documentation-about-Windows-Installation-tp4855536p4855536.html Sent from the Installation, Setup, Upgrades mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
