You can avoid it by not reinstalling the product... :-) Reinstall
basically uninstalls the product and then reinstalls it. Some products
have more problems with this than others. Apparently Maps is one of the
products for which a reinstall is not ideal.

As an end user there is not much you can do about this. If you are
using Plone 3.3 or higher and do not use the portal_quickinstaller in
the ZMI but go to the Site Setup in the Plone UI and use the Add/Remove
products page, that is a safer way. In at least some cases it will warn
you that a product has a newer version but for some reason can not be
safely upgraded because there are no automatic upgrade instructions.
The Add/Remove Products page refuses to let you just reinstall a package
as it knows that this may be "dangerous" as you found out.

The whole reinstall products experience can be a bit hairy, and it is
not always easy for developers to keep up with the latest improvements here.

In this case, now that you know it, the simplest is maybe to next time
first go to the maps_properties page and make a screenshot, then
reinstall (which is not actually always needed, but that is hard to
know) and look at the differences.
