Where to begin. Got to the Black Cat early and had to wait around
forever before the club let people into the stage area. Got to hear
interesting chatter like, "My friends will be so impressed I saw them, "
and " I gonna show these fags how a DC mosh pitter truly is, (direct
quote I shit you not). Quarter passed eleven the doors where open thus
allowing people to breathe yet again.
Firewater went on at 11:30 and played wonderfully for about an hour
and 15 minutes. Being up front, I did not get to see if alot of peole
were groovin, but I noticed that some were. They played music pretty
equaly from both of their albums, adding in extra solos, fake lyrics and
holy cat calls to the delight of the audience. Again their sax player
was different but he was noticlably in a better mood then that last few
that have played for them. As always the organ player jumped into the
crowd and danced around with all the pretty ladies and made the show
more audience interactive. Tod, of course, filled with angst and
Catholic school guilt, played wonderfully, throwing himself into the
music with out being a rock star or pretencious. What can I say, he is a
born rock star wether he knows it or not. laura made a good observation,
due to the loudness of the music, Tod's lyrics did not sound as witty
and meaningful as they do on the album. Oh well. Needless to say, if
GVSB died before hitting stage I still would have gone home happy
because Firewater was that good. My sore neck was proof postive.
Enough about the opening band, lets get to what people want to hear
about, the main attraction:Girls Against Boys! Still lugging their own
gear and setting up everything themselves, GVSB made it on stage at 1:00
in the morning, or their abouts. The crowd had grown to about a full
house and peole were cramming near the stage. I wish I could say that
GVSb just tore the place apart with the first song, but that would be a
lie. They played a remix or sorts of Vera Cruz that got the diehards
groovin and everyelse wondering. Eli was in top form flying around the
stage and defying gravity in a way that makes Jordan look like he has no
skills. What was amazing is that Jonny was very into, which to me is
surprising. Usually he is the concervative one who lays down the funky
bass lines and holds tha band together, or so it seems. But tonight he
was making the floor shake, often jumping around or teasing the crowd by
lunging ever so close to the edge of the stage. Scott was almust fucking
the mic stand, I beleive that is the only way to describe it. Alex, well
Alex looked like he should have ben playing at a wedding. Hair perfectly
quioffed and wearing a dark dress shirt, he was clearly on a different
level then the rest, he had a touch of sophistication to the show.
Someone remarked that he looked like Bruce Springsteens drummer. All
these shenigans lasted all of four or five songs. The guitar amp blew.
The intermition lasted about ten minutes. the audience was
entertained by funny bass lines, Scott swearing under his breath and
Alex announcing that Jonny was the GVSB employee of the month, with a
bonus of fifty bucks and six extra hours of sick leave. Not high comedy,
but it got the crowd to laugh a little.
Then the band started to rock again, whipping out songs like Disco
Six Six Six, Magattraction, a very haunting and beautiful version of
Zodiac Love Team as well as others. Most of the songs that were played
that night consisted of songs from House of..., V-Lux and one or two
from Cruise. There were only two songs from Freak, being Park Ave and
Vogue Thing. Unfortunatly, somewhere in all of that, there was another
guitar problem which only Eli could fix. The highlight of the show ,for
me, was the very energentic rendition of Psychic know-How (notice, this
song has no guitar). Everyone in the band obviously was going crazy, Eli
lunging at the keyboards, head on a swivel, feet in the air. Jonny
jumping up in the air to empasize his entrenched rhythems. The best was
seeing Scott just tear apart the stage, weaving in and out of the band
members, hiding by the drums only to lunge at the audeience with aevil
laugh. Pure bliss for the rock and roll fan.
The encore was nice, but only two songs. But it was two thirty
thereabouts when the herd left, happy and ready to go home and sleep.
Comments about the crowd:
1. No body but the people I recognized from the list were moving for
anything except what was GVSB "popular songs". All the moshing (which I
shall get to later) was done fro Park Ave and Superfire. Weird.
2. Drunk frat boys who were six five stood right in front of myself and
then proceeded to throw beer on all those in the immediate vicinity. I
al still trying to decide wethar or not my hair was mostly sweat or
beer. These are the same people who started a pit.
3. Got to meet some cool people though. The people ther eseemed pretty
cool, at least the ones who were not throwing beer.
Hope you enjoyed the review, jeff
