Yes it does happen from time to time, when a bug happen. 

This is a big TODO on our roadmap.

Could you point me to code that currently tries to shutdown sflphoned?

I suggest completely different approach, dbus should have (haven't searched 
through docs yet) some builtin event notifying that other side disconnected
