I also had this error.
("Process /usr/lib/sflphone/sflphoned exited with status 1"
and when trying to start the daemon manually, it complained about
an already running daemon, but there was no such process.)
I just removed the sfl.pid file in my home directory and
then I was able to start the client again. (which, in turn,
obviously was able to start the daemon.)
rm ~/.cache/sflphone/sfl.pid
(Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal, SFLphone 1.2.0 from ppa)
