Hey,

So I noticed from the following page -

http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/sfwnv/sfw_content_nv_36

that SFW includes glib 1.2.10 and gtk+ 1.2.10. From PSARC 2001/804, I
note that these are currently marked as 'Contracted External'. I'd like
to propose that these get EOL'd during the Nevada timeframe for the
following reasons -

o GTK+ 1.2.10 and Glib 1.2.10 are now several years old. They
are unsupported by the community, and there will be no more
new releases of these libraries. The newer versions are
*significantly* better both in terms of stability, support,
internationalization, accessibility, etc.. and we should
          encourage their use.
o A quick scan of /usr/sfw using ldd suggests that there is
          nothing currently linking with them
o Alan Coopersmith mentioned that the only 2 contracts that
he recalled were Netscape and Xscreensaver. Netscape
has mostly gone away to be replaced with Mozilla/Firefox
which links against GTK+/Glib 2.x. Xscreensaver currently
links against GTK+/Glib 2.x now as well.

I do have the following concerns -

o Things in the companion CD *may* link against these libraries.
I don't have the companion CD contents installed on my system
          so I haven't checked
o Bits on softdist [an internal location for software] may also
          link against these libraries?
o Relatively popular external software like XMMS/EMACS may still
depend on these libraries, and cause undue hassle to those who
want to build and use them.

thoughts?

Glynn
