After a couple of tries I figured it was ANT_HOME that was causing the 
installation to try to write into a non-writable directory.
The Makefile.sfw for ant seems to be free from popular java variables, 
except for a place where ANT_HOME is used directly from the environment :-(
So it builds fine now . . .
