Which functions from the Standard C Library require the application programmer 
to explicitly change the default stack size ?

While i do not really understand the "slowing consumers down by artificial 
means" comment, I am certain that all the subscribers to this mailing list 
(myself included) would greatly appreciate a comparison between the performance 
of GNU MP with alloca(3C) as opposed to GNU MP with malloc(3C).
