One question that's not entirely clear from the webrev in isolation: Is the ImageMagick build optimized? The configure script won't do optimization on its own, I had to explicitly specify "CFLAGS=-O CXXFLAGS=-O" to force it. (Given the performance difference I got, I suspect the ImageMagick we currently ship isn't optimized either.) If it isn't optimized, can optimization be enabled?
