Hi all,

this is a followup to my recently posted question with some additional info.

Printing an ascii file works.

        /opt/tarantella/bin/lp -d tta_printer /etc/hosts

************************************************************************ *****
Printing the test page

/opt/tarantella/bin/scripts/printtestpage.en.sh

Looking for Secure Global Desktop Administrator...
Printing test page (text) for UNIX user root
-> Secure Global Desktop user .../_ens/o=Tarantella System Objects/cn=Administrator @ ultra.smartsoft.internal
Real print command is /bin/lp
Using printer tta_printer (LPDEST=<null>,PRINTER=<null>,TTA_PRINTER=<null>)
Printing on printer tta_printer for user root
-> Secure Global Desktop user .../_ens/o=Tarantella System Objects/cn=Administrator
request id is tta_printer-115 (standard input)

produces the following lines in /opt/tarantella/var/log/print.log.

2006/10/27 16:34:41 Printing test page (text) for UNIX user root
2006/10/27 16:34:42 Secure Global Desktop print job root-9649 for user [EMAIL PROTECTED]

However, the printer spits out garbage (conversion from PDF to PostScript does not take place).

************************************************************************ *****
Printing a small PDF

        /opt/tarantella/bin/lp A.pdf

basically works but the PDF is sent unconverted to the PostScript printer, so we again get only garbage. ************************************************************************ *****

I have the following configuration

• SGD installed on a Solaris 10 x86 machine (application server and SGD server are the same) • Mac (MacOSX 10.2) client connecting to the application server (Native client)

After logging in on the application server I enter the following command in a terminal session

        /opt/tarantella/bin/lp A.pdf

and expect this file to be printed on the default printer of my MacOSX (BSD unix) box. The printer is a HP 4MP PS and understands PostScript. The file is actually printed, however it seems that no conversion from PDF to PostScript takes place. The PDF should fit on one page, the printer spits out multiple pages starting with

%PDF-1.3 ...

and then only garbage. I browsed through the documentation and found that the /opt/tarantella/etc/data/default.printerinfo.txt on the SGD server might need some tweaking. It currently contains the default entry

[UNIX]
"_Default" = "QMS 1060 Print System" PostScript

I also tried

[UNIX]
"_Default" = "QMS 1060 Print System" PCL

and

[UNIX]
"_Default" = "HP LaserJet 4P/4MP PS" PCL

but without more success. So which piece in this puzzle is actually responsible for converting a PDF or a PNG or whatever to PostScript or PCL? It seems I am missing an important part.

Any ideas?

Thanks again!

Regards,

  Andreas
